De Grand Prix van Japan werd flink beïnvloed door regen. De coureurs zochten kort na de start de pits op om te wisselen voor natte banden en toen het harder begon te regenen, werd de race na twaalf ronden stilgelegd. Na enkele tientallen minuten keerden de coureurs terug naar de baan, maar door de aanhoudende hevige regen werd de Grand Prix kort daarna definitief afgebroken. De volgorde die voor de eerste onderbreking was ingesteld, bleef gehandhaafd en met de helft van de race voltooid kregen de coureurs de volledige punten toegekend.
